Ancient Citadels

• Citadel of «Kastro» (Castle) village

«Kastro» (Castle) constituted the old capital of Sifnos and is lived ceaseless by 3rd millenium B.C. In the top of ellipsoid hill of village are found the ruins of ancient citadel of «Kastro» village. Walls from Sifnos’ marble, Roman sarcophaguses, ancient columns, “lotzies” (gates-gallery) and small churches the 16th and 17th century compose the unique ancient citadel of «Kastro».

• Citadel of «Agios Andreas» (St. Andrew)

The citadel of «Agios Andreas» (St. Andrew) is dated by 13th century B.C. and is the first organised visiting archaeological place of Sifnos. The group of citadel includes a majestic Mycenaean wall and a dense urban web constituted from streets, buildings, one big holy, work of management of rain waters and many still discoveries.
In the archaeological place of «Agios Andreas» there is also the newest museum of Sifnos with exhibits not only from the Citadel, but also from the rest island. It has been recently rewarded with the diploma «Europa Nostra»

• Citadel of «Agios Nikitas»

The citadel of «Agios Nikitas» is dated by 6th century B.C. and she is accessible by a unique hiking route and the visitor can distinguish parts from her ancient walls, but also remnants of an ancient tower.

• Citadel of «Profitis Ilias» (Prophet Elias) at Troulaki

The citadel of «Prophet Ilias» at Troulaki is dated from 6th century B.C. and it is also accessible by hiking route as the top of hill of Prophet Elias, where there are found the remnants parts of ancient Citadel.

• Archaeological Museum of Sifnos at «Kastro»

The archaeological museum Siphnos is found in the settlement «Kastro» and includes exhibits from 8th until 1st century B.C. as currencies, ceramics, sculptures, statues and other made of marble exhibits as sepulchral columns and heads of pillars which also known as «Kionokrana».

Churches – Monasteries

In the cultural history of Sifndos are included also the many churches and Monasteries of island. Αs it is characteristically saidn in Sifnos they exist above 360 churches «one for every day of the year», with most to constitute historical monuments of island. The most remarkable monasteries are following:

• Monastery of «Vrisiani» at Exampela

It is one from the bigger Monasteries of Sifnos and is dated by the 17th century. In the Monastery you can find also the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art with abundance religious and ecclesiastical exhibits from the 17th century and not only.

• Monastery of «Profitis Ilias Apsilou» (Prophet Elias the “Tall”)

It is built in the top of hill of Prophet Elias in altitude of 700 meters on the ruins of ancient Citadel

• Monastery of «Chrysostomos» (Chrysostom) at Kato Petali

One more from the historical Monasteries of island, in which functioned the 17th century the first Greek school of Sifnos. In the same Monastery functioned later also the «School of the Holy Sepulchre».

• Monastery of «Panagia (Holy Mother) Phirogion» at Katavati

It is dated by the 16th century and has been rewarded with the honorary diploma «Europa Nostra» for her restoration by Greek Company of Environment and Culture.

• Monastery of «Panagia Vounou» (Holy Mother of the mountain)

It was built in the beginning of 19th century and is found 500 meters from the street which connects Apollonia and Plati Gialo having a astonishing view to the last settlement.

Other remarkable churches of Sifnos are: «Panagia Crissopigi» (Holy Mother the Golden Source) which also is the Patron Saint of Sifnos, the «Epta Martires» (Seven Martyrs) that both last ones are built in peninsulas and many more.

 


Beaches

The beaches of Sifnos are rewarded every year with the «Blue Flag» and are suitable for all the preferences. There are from organised until more deserted one and from beaches with pebble up to golden sandy beaches. Most remarkable are the followings:

• Platis Gialos

The beach of Platis Gialos is one from the largest beaches of Cyclades and is rewarded each year with «Blue Flag» from the FEE of European Union while fills the conditions of quality, services, safety and installations. In the beach you can find a abundance of shops of food, tourism, and information. In Platis Gialos you will also find a small theater, shelter of piscatorial ships and in the wider region you can visit the ancient «White Tower», but also ancientest (11th century) church of island, the «Panagia Kitriani» (or Kypriani) in the opposite uninhabited islet.

• Kamares

One more beach rewarded with the Blue Flag of European Union with coast of length of 6,5 kilometres. In the beach of Kamares you can find each shop and service you want and enjoy a sandy coast with unique virgin vegetation.

• Vathi

One of the more beautiful beaches with sand of Sifnos, but also from the biggest ones. In this you can find also the small church of «Taxiarhes» (Seneschals) of chronology of 16th century.
The above beaches do not constitute all the beaches of Sifnos, while the island allocates at least 28 beautiful and at the same time unique beaches that deserve visits by the tourist.
